In the wake of the Great Recession, Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to guard against efforts to fleece users of financial services. The Trump administration moved swiftly to stop CFPB’s work in January — putting the agency’s staff on leave and ordering it to stop investigations of bad corporations. This frees fly-by-night companies to make false promises and pick consumers pockets. They are even moving to repeal a regulation that was expected to save affected bank customers $5 billion in overdraft fees. This will result in more money from your pockets to big banks’ coffers.
